I started designing websites in the early 2000s, when HTML 4.01 and a solid grasp of CSS could get you pretty far. Then I started graduate school and built a website for my department, only to watch it get swallowed by an institutionally branded template.

When I started teaching, keeping up with the latest scripting languages stopped being a priority. By the time I came back to it, WordPress had established itself as the open-source workhorse, Squarespace had carved out the design-forward niche, and Wix was building toward a block-based editor that could meet developers and non-developers at the same table. I can work in all three.
